Support California Fighting Plastic Bag Use – AB1998

May 18th, 2010

As you know, we here at Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers are all about helping our oceans and our environment – and the biggest problem we ALL face right now is plastic! It is literally chocking us to death – it’s killing wildlife as well as getting into the food chain where it is entering our bodies. All this is happening because we’re using something designed to last forever for one-time use packaging – RIDICULOUS!!

Right now many cities in California, (and other states), have their own plastic bag legislation – but California is trying to create one uniform policy for addressing all types of single-use bags to encourage consumers to use reusable bags, the most sustainable alternative by passing AB 1998.

If passed, AB 1998 would:

  • Ban single-use plastic bags at supermarkets, convenience stores and large retail establishments with pharmacies. The ban would not apply to bags used to carry bulk items, produce or raw meat to the checkout.
  • Limit the distribution of paper bags at these stores to encourage consumers to use reusable bags.
  • Require reusable bags to be available for purchase at these stores instead of using single-use carryout bags.

We support Californians who are working to reduce the use of plastic bags and hope you will too!

Bamboo Surf Fins

May 10th, 2010

We know that many of our customers here at Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers are also surfers, so we thought we’d pass along an interesting product we came across: bamboo fins.

They’re not only a ‘green’, sustainable wood but apparently they’re awesome to ride – super light, yet strong. The tip has a slight flex, yet the body of the fin is quite rigid. All of the elements for a high performance center fin to fit your stick. Plus they’re beautiful to look at.

So go green when you get wet and try out some bamboo surfing fins.  :-)

Shakey’s Pizza Returns to Hawaii

February 16th, 2010

It’s been 30 years since there was Shakey’s pizza and banjo music in Hawaii and now it looks like it’s about to return, (well, the pizza anyway – the jusy is still out on the banjo music)!

Shakey’s got its name from Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson, who while serving in the Pacific during World War II caught malaria that gave him the shakes. In 1954 Johnson converted a closed grocery store located in Sacrament, California, into a pub that also served pizza, naming it Shakey’s Pizza Parlor & Ye Public House.

The first of 3 restaurants is scheduled to open by the end of this month over in the Waipahu Town Center.

For those of you who want to get your hands on this new, eco-friendly motor oil it will be available at Honest-1 Auto Care, a national full-service auto repair and maintenance franchise chain with 20 locations in the US: http://www.honest-1.com

It’s also available at Amazon.com , or if you’re in the PA area you can find it at National Auto Stores.

5 Gas Saving Tips

November 13th, 2009

With everyone trying to save a buck and the price of gas not going down much in the near future, here are five simple tips to help you get the most out of your gas money:

  1. Don’t buy premium if you don’t need to. Check your owners manual, you may be surprised to find out the manufacturer recommends a lower octane than you think!
  2. Group and schedule your errands together. If you drop your kids off at school in the morning why not pick up your dry cleaning and hit the market on the way home instead of making a separate trips later?
  3. No junk in the trunk! The heavier your car weighs, the more gas it consumes. Keep your trunk and backseat free of unneeded items and extra weight.
  4. Slow down and drive at a steady speed. The faster you speed the fewer MPG you’ll get. Also keeping a steady speed with less quick starts or hard braking will burn less fuel than you need to.
  5. Check tire inflation. Under-inflated tires cause more drag and burn more fuel than properly inflated ones.
  6. Only use the AC on the highway. At slower speeds around town it’s more fuel efficient to leave the windows down and the AC off. Once you get on the highway and speeds reach 50mph it’s actually MORE fuel efficient to roll the windows up and use the AC as the open windows cause more drag.

Nothing earth-shattering, just some simple things that can add up to a few more bucks in your pocket instead of the pump.  :-)
