Sea Worthy… Car?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

In an attempt to raise money for a charity helping soldiers and set a record with his amphibious Renault Laguna, a man in England will attempt to be the first to steer a car across the Irish Sea.

The journey is 23 miles long and should take about 6 hours to complete… if he and his buddies are able to stay afloat!

You can read all about his escapade here…

Of course we here at Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers can’t help but comment that we’re sure his seats will take a beating and be in need of some car seat covers when he finishes.  :-)

Hawaii Getting Biodiesel

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

An Iowa based company called Renewable Energy Group, (REG), is partnering with Hawaiian Electric Company to supply the state’s utility with 400,000 gallons of biodiesel for their new Campbell Industrial Park Generating Unit.

REG will produce biodiesel from used cooking oil and waste animal fat for testing on the 110‐megawatt combustion turbine generator.

“Being able to use liquid renewable fuels in our generating units is one of many steps ‐‐ including more electricity from other renewable sources such as solar, wind, biomass and the ocean ‐‐ to meet our goal of providing reliable electric service while reducing Hawaii’s dependence on fossil fuels”,  said Hawaiian Electric executive vice president Robbie Alm.

We here at Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers salute Hawaii’s efforts at going green.  :-)

Missouri in Dry Dock

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

‘Mighty Mo’ was pushed and pulled by 4 tugboats just before sunrise this morning for 2 miles until it reached it’s destination at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard’s Drydock 4, the largest of the shipyard’s four drydocks, where it will remain until January 2010 while getting needed repairs and maintenance.

Many veterans were on hand to witness the historical event, some of whom even served on the mighty ship.

The 887-foot battleship, the last one ever built for the U.S. fleet, is famous for its “surrender deck,” marked with the brass plaque that will undergo polishing. The Missouri is barred by its agreement with the Navy from firing up its engines inside Pearl Harbor so it proceeded without any power or running water during its move.

You can read more and see photos of the event here at the Honolulu Advertiser website…

MPG for Plug In Automobiles

Monday, October 12th, 2009

In an effort to get consumers the real numbers for the cost of owning and driving a plug-in vehicle the Society of Automotive Engineers, (SAE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, (NREL), are finalizing their proposal to the EPA in which they recommend that there be two rating listed for plug-in automobiles: one measuring miles per gallon, (MPG), and the other measuring electricity per mile, (EPM).

The EPA currently combines gas and electricity mileage making the ratings appear artificially high, giving some cars unrealistic and sky high MPG figures. If you get to see them rated by electricity per mile and gallons per mile you can compare apples to apples with more realistic findings. Jeff Gonder, an NREL researcher says “If you combine them into one (number) artificially, you can’t derive a final output like annual costs.”

The NREL is also coming up with a new way to judge fuel efficiency with dynamometers.  Since putting the car on the machine and seeing how far it can go until the tank is empty doesn’t reflect actual performance for plug-ins, the researchers are mimicking average driving behavior on the machines to come up with average yearly fuel costs.

Relief Coming to Oahu

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Have you felt it? Have you seen it?

The last few days on Oahu have been on the uncomfortable side as the lack of trade winds have left Islanders with increased humidity and vog, (’smog’ from volcanoes on the Big Island). The blame for the conditions lies partly with the season and partly the southeasterly winds which brought up some moisture from the tropics.

Forecasters are saying relief is in sight as they’re expecting the trades to pick up over the weekend. While most tourists probably haven’t really noticed, relief can’t come soon enough for most locals!

Free Vehicle Inspection

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

For all of our Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers customers who live in the Duluth, MN, area we thought we’d give you a head’s up and let you know about a FREE vehicle inspection and Car Care Fair going on next Saturday, October 10th.

Seems that NAPA Auto Parts in Hermantown will be performing free vehicle inspections from 10am to 3pm. The Hermantown NAPA Auto Parts shop is teaming up with The Food Shelf, Community Action Duluth and West Duluth Boy Scouts Troop 25 for a Car Care Fair.

Twin Ports NAPA Auto Care Centers are also donating two cars to Community Action Duluth, to be given to deserving families in their community.

In addition to the vehicle inspections the Car Care Fair will include West Duluth Boy Scout Troop 25 selling food and refreshments as a fundraiser.

Not only do we believe you should beautify and protect your car’s interior with auto seat covers but you certainly should mantain the mechanical safety of your vehicle too.

Sounds like a win-win for all involved.  :-)
