Ocean Friendly Garden Workshop Tomorrow

Friday, June 26th, 2009

For all of our customers in the South Bay area of Los Angeles this news is for you!

Tomorrow, June 27th, the South Bay Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is joining up with their local municipal water district to bring you a FREE workshop on how to plant and maintain an ocean friendly garden.  :-)

You’ll learn about using native plants and eco-friendly materials to create and sustain a garden that uses less water and produces less runoff to pollute the watershed and ocean.

They will have professional landscapers, free tools and special incentives. Plus you’ll come away knowing that you’ll soon be doing your part to conserve precious water while reducing your usage of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides..

The workshop runs 9am-1pm at the Social Hall at Joslyn Center: 339 Sheldon St, El Segundo, CA, 90245. Refreshments will be provided.

These workshops are VERY popular and space is limited so you must register in advance: http://www.sbesc.com

This is a sad, sad photo of a huge oil spill that recently occurred in Queensland, Australia.

A cargo ship leaked tons of fuel into the ocean after cyclonic seas caused containers of ammonium nitrate to break loose and rip giant holes in the hull of the ship. Why the ship was out in these rough sea conditions will be the subject of a full investigation.

To date, the total amount of oil spilled has not been determined, but a spokesman for the company Swire Shipping, Ltd. which owns the vessel in question, says that it’s believedto be significantly more than the 11,000 gallons originally estimated.

The amount of wildlife affected by the spill is yet to be determined as well, but state Environmental Protection Agency workers are on the scene…

A reminder of just how fragile our oceans are!

Celebrate International Surfing Day

Friday, June 19th, 2009

We here at Buy Hawaiian Seat Covers know that most holidays are just made up by the greeting card companies to sell more cards, right? C’mon… Secretary’s Day, Boss’s Day, Administrative Professionals Day – are you kidding???

Well here’s one ‘manufactured’ holiday we can get behind: International Surfing Day.  :-)

This Saturday, June 20th, you have an official excuse to go surfing! So warn your spouse and clear your calendar because it’s time to go surf.

There’s really more behind this holiday: Surfer Magazine created this unofficial ‘holiday’ to not only celebrate and promote the sport of surfing but to bring awareness to the state of the world’s oceans and beaches, (some of which aren’t doing too well).

The goal is to get folks out to the beach for a surf and then hang out and participate in a beach clean up. There are TONS of events scheduled all around the globe and you can go to the official ISD website to find and event near you and join in.  :-)

Car Care Tips: Washing Your Car

Monday, June 15th, 2009

What’s one of the easiest, yet most important things you can do for your car?

Wash it regularly! Keeping your car clean will protect and extend the life and beauty of it’s finish.

Removing dirt and road debris means more than just the occasional hosing off – it means getting a good quality mitt or sponge along with a good quality shampoo. Gone are the days when a rag and some dish soap were car washing staples. These days that rag will scratch your paint and dish soap will dull and actually remove your paint’s finish causing early oxidation.

Our friends over at Autopia have a complete ‘How-To Guide for Washing and Drying Your Car‘ that’s worth checking out.

Of course, once you get the outside looking good you know we suggest a pair of our Hawaiian seat covers to beautify and protect your car’s interior.  :-)

Shut Down 220 State Parks?

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Times are tough, and California is faced with some horrible financial scenarios. Among the programs in jeopardy is state parks. Gov. Schwarzenegger has proposed cutting the parks budget to zero, which could result in up to 220 state parks being closed.

Of course, we understand that some parks might need their hours and services cut, and others may need to be closed for the time being, as we weather this financial storm. But our parks are an important refuge for people, especially when times are tight. And they are a critical part of our economy — for every dollar we spend on state parks they bring $2.35 back to our economy in tourism.

Parks spending is such a small part of the overall problem. In fact, 100% of parks funding only makes up 0.88% of the budget shortfall. And these parks, from Montana Del Oro to Topanga State Park, mean a lot to people around the state.

Join us in e-mailing Gov. Schwarzenegger, telling him to set aside enough funding to keep our state parks open as an important haven for Californians in these troubled times, by clicking on the link below:
