Missouri in Dry Dock

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

‘Mighty Mo’ was pushed and pulled by 4 tugboats just before sunrise this morning for 2 miles until it reached it’s destination at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard’s Drydock 4, the largest of the shipyard’s four drydocks, where it will remain until January 2010 while getting needed repairs and maintenance.

Many veterans were on hand to witness the historical event, some of whom even served on the mighty ship.

The 887-foot battleship, the last one ever built for the U.S. fleet, is famous for its “surrender deck,” marked with the brass plaque that will undergo polishing. The Missouri is barred by its agreement with the Navy from firing up its engines inside Pearl Harbor so it proceeded without any power or running water during its move.

Honolulu May Demolish Natatorium

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Honolulu’s famed Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium which was erected in 1927 as a memorial to those who served and died in World War I, is in danger of being demolished, according to city officials.

The city’s famous saltwater pool has been closed for over 30 years now due to the dangerous condition of it’s crumbling deck and deterioration of the pool itself. Now city officials are trying to decide what to do with the famous structure, (not sure what has taken them so long!).

Opinions vary from total demolition, to demolition of only the pool and restoration of the decorative facade.

You can read more about the fate of the natatorium here at the Honolulu Advertiser website…

19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic This Weekend

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Hey all you Gidgets and Moondoggies – it’s time to wax down your boards and throw on your swimsuits and rash guards because it’s time for the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s (DLSA) annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau!!

The big shindig will be held this Saturday, September 20th, at legendary Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, California.

“Down at Doheny where the surfers all go…” is a famous line from the Surfaris’ tune about the surfing lifestyle. Nothing could be more true than this Saturday when the 19th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic features a classic longboard surf contest, a traditional Luau with Polynesian dancing and a live band.

The event honors one of the most famous surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, Dale Velzy. DLSA has had the honor of producing this venue for 19 years and has continued its homage to Dale Velzy since he passed away in 2005.

This event is open to the public and is for all surfers who enjoy the same things that Dale enjoyed; having fun with friends and family. It is in this spirit that DLSA holds this annual event so that everyone can enjoy the surf contest, luau, dancing under the stars and having a great time at Doheny.

The event kicks off with the surf contest at 6:30 a.m. The Luau festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. followed closely by the Polynesian review, awards ceremony, raffles and then on to the dancing. It¹s great fun for everyone.
